A physician by profession, Dr. Sekhar Koirala was born on August 25, 1950 in Biratnagar. He is the son of renowned NC leader Nona Koirala and Keshav Koirala. He is contesting from Morang-7 in the CA Election 2013 representing Nepali Congress.

Born to Koirala clan, he began his political career from NC when he was a student. While he was studying at Mahendra Morang Campus, he vehemently criticized the decision to add King Mahendra's name in front of the campus. Being a member of BP Koirala family, he remained active in NC party politics though he never held any position in the party.

He never disassociated himself from NC while he worked at the Bir Hospital, Koshi Zonal Hospital, BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences. Dr. Koirala was also jailed for three months when BP Koirala returned from exile in India. He was serving at the Bir Hospital then. He was in India for his Medical Degree when the referendum on system of government was declared in Nepal. He interrupted his studies and returned back to Nepal to work in favor of multi-party system. He had returned with a letter from then Indian PM Morarji Desai when BP was on house arrest.

He gave up his profession a year ahead of his retirement and fully dedicated himself to politics. He was acquainted with Maoist leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai while studying in Delhi, which helped him in playing an important role in the peace process. He began the dialogue process with then rebel Maoist leaders after being given the responsibility by the party president. He faced severe criticism for his attempts from within the party.

In the CA Election 2008, Dr. Koirala lost to Bijay Kumar Gacchadar of Madhesi Jana Adhikar Forum, Nepal from Morang-7. Gacchadar, who had won from two constituencies, left his seat of Morang-7, which paved way for Dr. Koirala to win the by-election from the constituency with 12,071 votes.
