A US court has dismissed a lawsuit accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “responsible for the deaths of thousands of people” in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the Gujarat riots of 2002, saying as a sitting head of government he is entitled to immunity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not have to face a US lawsuit claiming he failed to stop 2002 Gujarat riots, a federal judge in New York ruled on Wednesday. Before India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, went New York City today for the United Nations General Assembly, a New York lawyer sued him in US court. The lawsuit filed holds Modi and the Indian government “responsible for the deaths of thousands of people” in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the Gujarat riots of 2002.The judge's decision comes ahead of a planned visit by President Barack Obama to attend India's January 26 Republic Day celebrations at Modi's invitation.
