A major earthquake occurred in Nepal on 12 May 2015 at 12:50 pm local time (07:05 UTC) with a moment magnitude of 7.3, 18 km (11 mi) southeast of Kodari. Three months have now passed since massive twin earthquakes struck Nepal, killing more than 8,800 people, injuring more than 22,000, flattening nearly 600,000 homes, and leaving millions still in need of food, clean water and adequate shelter. The Dharahara tower was a major tourist attraction and was open to the public from 2005 until its collapse in 2015 Earthquake. A historic tower built in the 19th century collapsed in the Nepali capital Kathmandu when an earthquake struck shortly before noon local time. The Dharahara Tower, built in 1832, was a landmark that had been open to visitors for the last 10 years and had a viewing balcony. The tower had a spiral staircase containing 213 steps. The eighth floor held a circular balcony for observers that provided a panoramic view of the Kathmandu valley. It also had a 5.2-metre (17 ft) bronze mast on the roof.
