Taplejung landslide death toll reaches 57

A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has buried at least 57 people and left dozens missing in six villages in Nepal’s mountainous north-east, officials have said.Landslides occurred simultaneously in Libang, Thokling, Tinglabu and Lingket villages of Taplejung following a cloudburst in the eastern hills. Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has recorded 129 mm rainfall in a period of 24 hours on Wednesday.The Himalayan nation is still recovering from earthquakes in April and May that killed more than 8,700 people and caused massive damage, with many of the roads cut off by landslides.A landslide in Myangkhama village of Taplejung has also blocked part of the Mechi Highway, making it difficult for additional rescue teams to arrive in the district.
