Mumbai's suburban train network, often described as the city's lifeline, proved to be a death trap with at least eight people dying on an average every day between 2005 and 2014 after falling off trains or while crossing the tracks.

A total of 29278 people lost their lives in accidents, with 6989 dying after falling off trains that are usually chock-a-block through the day. Mumbai, formerly called Bombay, is a sprawling, densely populated city on India’s west coast. On the Mumbai Harbour waterfront stands the iconic Gateway of India stone arch, built by the British Raj in 1924. Offshore, nearby Elephanta Island holds ancient cave temples dedicated to Shiva. The city is also famous as the heart of the Hindi-language Bollywood film industry.
