The death toll in the massive earthquake which struck Nepal on Saturday has passed 7,180 and many thousands are still unaccounted for.
The film industry is also known as Kollywood or Kaliwood. The first Nepali-language film was Satya Harischandra, which was released in 1951 in Darjeeling, India, and produced by D. B. Pariyar.Nepali cinema, whilst not as established as Indian cinema, is hugely influenced by Bollywood so that Nepali films often use Bollywood-style songs and narrative. This has earned the Nepali film industry the name Kollywood, after the capital and centre of the Nepali-language film industry: Kathmandu. The 1996-2006 civil war shook the very foundations of the Himalayan kingdom, triggering the country's transformation from a Hindu kingdom to a secular republic, and bringing to fore issues of inclusion, transitional justice, as well as social and political change.
