Dashain begins today with Ghatasthapana

Posted by Anup Baral October 13, 2015 :  The biggest festival of the Nepalis, Dashain, has formally commenced from Thursday with the performing of Ghatasthapana.
On the first day of Badadasain festival, known as the “Ghatasthapana” today, people initiate the auspicious “Jamara” at their houses across the nation.



The auspicious Jamara is also initiated with Vedic rituals at Dashain Ghar at the historical Hanumandhoka. People celebrate the festival by worshipping the goddess Durga as per Hindu rituals.Dashain (also pronounced as Dasain) is the longest and most celebrated festival in Nepal.

Dashain has its different names. It is called Dasain, Vijaya Dashami and Dahsera. The way of celebration and name differs, but most Nepali celebrate it for about 15 days with same zeal and enthusiasm.
Dashain, also known as Bada Dashain or Vijaya Dashami is the largest and longest festival in Nepal, which is celebrated by the Hindus of Nepal or Nepalese origin all over the world.

 The Dashain festival lasts for full fifteen days, starting in the day of Ghatasthapana (day 1), and ends in the day of Kojagrat Purnima (day 15).
The important ones being the first, seventh (Saptami), eighth (Maha Ashtami), ninth (maha nawami), tenth (Vijaya Dashami) and the fifteenth (Kojagrat Purnima), the tenth day is the most important among all, having the special value and actual meaning for the word ‘Dashain’.Dashain has its own stories, importance and significance.

It is regarded as victory of truth over the evil. Dashain is celebration of victory of good over bad. Dashain reminds us every year that the evil may be strong for a time; the truth and good will always prevail over it.
Every year we all Nepali, remember the message “Good always wins over the evil”, with the celebration of the great festival of Bada Dashain.
