Nicole Niquille Hospital Lukla in Nepal was created in 2005 as a private initiative by Nicole Niquille, the first Swiss mountain guide. The hospital is located in the Himalayas at 2800 meters above sea level for the medical care of around 10 000 people in Solukhumbu District a. A prime example of how a private project aid can afford to help themselves. The budget of the hospital amounts to 185 000 Swiss francs per year. The majority is financed by patrons from Switzerland. This amount not only the maintenance and medical aids are paid, but also the 25 employees. The two biggest challenges for the future are to find qualifed Nepalese doctors who long to settle in Lukla, and be able to secure donations for the operation of the hospital.
