Court slams life imprisonment to Bara rape convict

District Court, Bara today slammed a life imprisonment along with confiscation of property to Kanhaiya Gupta, who was charged with raping 6-year old minor. A single bench of justice Lipta Bahadur Thapa handed down the verdict. The court also ordered to provide Rs 2 lakhs as reparation to the girl's family.

The rape victim, Puja Sah, who admitted to Kanti Hospital in Kathmandu on February 22 following the rape, died of injuries on March 8. A 7-year-old girl was raped by a man and left unconscious in Bara district. The man involved in rape was later arrested by local police. He has agreed that he raped girland also said that he was drunk which led this incident to happened. Recently the country has witnessed most number of rapes since three months. According to the Police Headquarters, out of 30 rape cases throughout the county, 10 were reported in Kathmandu Valley, Subash Gotame has reported for Annapurna Post on Sunday. Three cases of rape, two of them on minors were reported in Kathmandu in past three days. According to the Police, after Kathmandu, most of the rape cases were reported in Eastern Development Region which witnessed 9 cases and least in Far Western Development Region with 1 case reported. Although the Police record states 30 rape cases, according to the organisations involved in women’s rights and news covered by media more than 50 rapes occurred throughout the nation.In the recent time, leading to similar turn of events, there has been persistent increase in deviance and crime against children. Kanchan Thakur, a 7 year old was raped and murder last kartik similarly Ashish Sah, son of Motilal Prasad Shah , was found dead about 400 meters from his home. Ashish Scummed to a serious injury to his skull. Different studies in Nepal also show that the perpetrators in rape cases being reported over the last few months are teachers, neighbours and even close relatives. Around 104 cases of rape and 10 cases of attempted rape were reported in a period from April 14 to June 14, 2013, according to a report prepared by Women Rehabilitation Centre. Mostly relatives, neighbours and teachers were the perpetrators in the reported rape cases. The prominent reason behind the widespread increase in sexual abuses against women is also the discriminatory provisions in the existing laws.
