Pollution in Kathmandu off the charts

Posted by Anup Baral March 16, 2015:
In recent decades, the air pollution in Kathmandu has worsened, due to the rapid rise in the number of inferior quality vehicles on the traffic congested roads, as well as the unregulated location of industries, particularly brick manufacturing.Nepal is among three worst performing countries in the world in term of air quality with regard to effects on human health, a new study said.

The Environment Performance Index (EPI) ranking—prepared by the Yale Centre for Environmental Law and Policy, Yale University and Centre for International Earth Science Information Network and Columbia University—has listed Nepal in the third last position among 132 countries scoring 18 out of 100 points provided for air pollution. Nepalese government (until now) hasn't been able to keep pace with the rapid increase in demand for building construction, road infrastructure and other types of services due to the tremendous population growth. As a consequence, there has been inadequate urban planning and this has led to pollution emitting industries being located in the middle of rapidly expanding residential suburbs.
