Update : Dr KC's 5th fast-unto-death protest begins

Posted by Anup Baral March 25, 2014 :
Dr Govinda KC, a senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, has said he will go on hunger strike from tomorrow, as the government ‘failed to address’ his demands. If Dr KC goes on fast-unto-death from tomorrow, it will be his fifth such strike against what he calls ‘irregularities in Nepal’s medical sector’.

On March 12, Dr KC had put forth 10-point demand, including action against officials involved in alleged irregularities and Kathmandu University officials for granting affiliation to two medical colleges, and served a 10-day ultimatum to the government. Dr KC has also been demanding implementation of a new medical policy which prohibits affiliation to a medical college until it takes the shape of a university, policy to establish medical colleges in rural areas of the country and implementation of a decision of the committee that was formed to study the feasibility of medical university and standards of medical colleges. “As the government has not addressed any of my demands, I will begin fast-unto-death from tomorrow on the premises of TUTH,” Dr KC told THT.
