Could Nepal have done more to prepare for the predicted earthquake? Dateline hears the personal stories amid the devastation and looks at the political faultlines that the disaster has opened up.
Data collection table from National Seismological Center Nepal.
2142 people in Kathmandu, 1886 in Bhaktapur and 885 in Lalitpur have been injured. Nepal was hit by a massive 7.9-magnitude earthquake Saturday, killing more than 4,000 people so far, injuring more than 10,000 others.Hospitals across the impoverished nation of 28 million people struggled to cope with the dead and injured from Nepal’s worst quake in 81 years, and a lack of equipment meant rescuers could look no deeper than surface rubble for signs of life. The Nepal earthquake led to an end of the World Heritage site, Durbar Square. The video shows the horrifying pictures of the shattering of one of the oldest sites in Nepal.
