Langtang survivors airlifted to Kathmandu

The locals who survived the avalanche that hit the village, the most densely populated settlement in the hinterlands of area, were taken to Kyangen and later airlifted to Ale Gumba in Kathmandu from Dhunche amid continuing avalanches from thepeak, Nepal Army’s Narayan Battalion said.

Choppers belonging to the Nepal Army, China and the Indian Air Force were used to rescue more than 160 residents, according to Dindup Tamang of Tamang added that the villagers had lost more than half of the family members – a grief compounded by their compulsion to leave their birth place and move out elsewhere. He appealed to the government take care of the displaced villagers. The residents disembarking from the helicopter had tears streaming down their eyes. More than 183 people were buried in thevillage, according to report. The area, which is the third best tourist destination in the country, is now deserted with no signs of human life. Tamang also said a mountain river dried after an avalanche from a nearby mountain at the Kyangen settlement.
