NBC Newsers Detained in Nepal For Using Drone

Nepal has banned flying of drones in its skies following the devastating earthquake, suspecting leakage of sensitive information through the use of the unmanned aerial vehicle, authorities said today. After the April 25 quake, some foreign media and other aid agencies used drones to track the loss of human lives and damages to properties.


Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a statement that Nepal has banned the use of drones as they could leak sensitive information and pictures of its valuable heritage sites clicked illegally. Yesterday Police in Nepal were not messing around today when an NBC News crew, along with a freelance drone operator, attempted to use a drone during coverage of the aftermath of April’s earthquake and aftershocks. NBC News correspondent Katy Tur was shooting video and stand-ups from Kathmandu when police interrupted, briefly detained and questioned the crew. And it was all caught on video from a bystander (below).The crew was not arrested or fined and the drone was eventually returned.
