Tens of thousands of pregnant women affected by Nepal quake

Even before the devastating magnitude-7.8 earthquake rocked Nepal’s capital on Saturday, the maternal health system there was severely compromised. Now, amid the carnage and destroyed hospitals, tens of thousands of pregnant women are facing even more troubling conditions.Protections for women and girls from gender-based violence and other threats will also be critical. Pregnant women affected by the disaster require maternal health services, including antenatal care, safe delivery services, post-partum care, and, for those who experience complications, emergency obstetric services.
The death toll from last week’s massive earthquake in Nepal has surpassed 7,500, Nepal’s National Emergency Operation Centre said Saturday. In total, 7,540 people, including at least 54 foreigners, have died from the magnitude-7.8 earthquake, the agency said. At least 14,000 others were injured.
