A magnitude of 7.8 strong earthquake has struck off Japan's Bonin Islands, on Saturday, shaking buildings in Tokyo, but there was no danger of a tsunami and no immediate reports of damage since the quake was extremely deep.Japan's Meteorological Agency says the offshore earthquake struck Saturday at 8:24 p.m. at a depth of 590 kilometers (370 miles). The meteorological agency did not issue a tsunami warning because the quake struck so far beneath the earth's surface. The US Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and a depth of 678 kilometres. On March 11, 2011, a massive 9.0 magnitude quake touched off a tsunami that left nearly 20,000 people dead and nuclear meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant.
