Buildings, police cars set on fire

Locals in the district staged protests demanding that the mid-western region be kept intact while demarcating the country into provinces. They also demanded that Surkhet district be developed as the capital of the new province. The District Police Office, Surkhet had enforced curfew from 1 pm till 9 pm in the evening. Chief District Officer Baldev Gautam said the incident occurred as the law enforcement agency opened air fire to maintain order. Protesters at first vandalized the office of Jhupra Drinking Water Project and then marched toward District Administration Office. The mob then set District Development Office building, municipality office building and the house of Nepali Congress joint general secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka on fire.credit- myrepublica. CPDCC President Dr Baburam Bhattarai said that his committee has mandated the Special Committee to prepare a report incorporating recommendations received to the meeting. The report with recommendations will be presented to the CA today. When asked regarding dispute on the demarcation of boundary of some districts, CPDCC President Bhattarai replied, "We have proposed Federal Commission to address disputes regarding delineation of federal setups. The Commission will settle the boundary issue". Informing that the discussion and dialogue on the report is on as it is not the final one, he said the differences likely to be addressed will be narrowed down and the unsettled ones will be discussed in the CA. The Special Committee has come up with an agreement for federating the country into six provinces based on the recommendations of the people across the country on July 20-21. The report has guaranteed the proviso of full press freedom. It has also included the phrase 'exploitation meted out by the unitary state system' which the Dalit community has been raising.
