econd Prime Minister of the Republican Nepal Madhav Kumar Nepal was born on March-6, 1953 in Gaur-3 of Rautahat. He is the son of Mangal Kumar Upadhyaya and Durga Devi. Nepal has a daughter and a son. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Science Faculty. He is contesting from Kathmandu-2 and Rautahat-1 in the CA Election 2013 representing CPN-UML. Elected as the prime minister of Nepal on May 23, 2009, Madhav Kumar Nepal began his political career since 1970. He became the founder politburo member of CPN (ML) in 1979 and was a member of the United Left Front in the democracy movement of 1990. In 1991, Nepal became politburo member of the CPN-UML. He was the UML's Foreign Department chief in 1994 and held the portfolios of deputy prime minister, defense and foreign ministry in the 9-month long government led by Manmohan Adhikary in 1995. Elected as general secretary of the CPN-UML by the 6th General Convention in 1998, Nepal became the opposition leader in the parliament in 2000. He was again elected as the party's general secretary by the 7th General Convention in 2003. In the CA Election 2008, Nepal was defeated from both constituencies he contested from and his party CPN-UML came third, which prompted him to resign from his post of party chief. In the CA Election 2008, he lost to UCPN-Maoist's Jhakku Prasad Subedi in Kathmandu-2 and to Devendra Patel, also from UCPN-Maoist, in Rautahat-6. Later he was nominated by the council of ministers as member of the CA. He served as a member of the Constitutional Committee in the CA. He has remained underground for about 15 years on multiple occasions during his political life of 43 years.
