Nawalparasi police open fire during Madhesi parties’ protest

At least three police personnel and four protestors sustained injuries when police opened fire to disperse an agitating mob in Basa of Nawalparasi on Saturday. Some Madhes-centric parties were staging protests in the area against the proposed demarcation of the boundaries of Pradeshes. Chief of District Police Office, SP Nal Prasad Upadhyaya, said the clash erupted while police tried to disperse the protestors in order to resume obstructed traffic. Accourding to thehimalayantimes, The agitators had obstructed roads in Kawasoti, Danda, Chormara, Rajahar and Bhedabari of the district. Upadhyaya also claimed that police had only fired rubber bullets. Chief District Officer Hari Prasad Mainali said police were compelled to open fire as the protestors headed toward the house of Baijanath Chaudhary, a CPN-UML central committee member and lawmaker of Nawalparasi Constituency-4. The protestors have been arguing that lawmaker Chauthary, despite being a Tharu, has not stood for their rights in the federal set-up. The injured are undergoing treatment at the Parasi-based Prithvi Chandra Hospital.
