Protests continue in Surkhet, Curfew in effect

The demonstration launched in the district against the inclusion of Karnali zone in the far-west province has entered third day. The UCPN (Maoist) is leading today's agitation supported by major political parties.

Protesters vandalized the Khalanga-based party of Nepali Congress (NC) after chasing away police deployed for security of the building. They have smashed doors and windows of the office. Police stepped in and lobbed shells of teargas and 12 rounds fire in air to maintain order. yesterday three people was killed as police opened fire at protesters defying curfew clamped in Birendranagar. The protests were demanding undivided Mid-western region turned violent. The identification of the deceased is yet to be ascertained and the dead body has been kept at the premises of District Police Office, Surkhet.The District Police Office, Surkhet had enforced curfew from 1 pm till 9 pm in the evening. Chief District Officer Baldev Gautam said the incident occurred as the law enforcement agency opened air fire to maintain order. Protesters at first vandalized the office of Jhupra Drinking Water Project and then marched toward District Administration Office.
