You've probably seen those levitating street performers who appear to be magically lifting themselves off the ground using nothing but a stick. However, the trick is actually more than meets the eye, and it relates to the clothing that they wear.
If you guessed that it was a platform all along, you'd be correct. The pole itself either directly inserted into the ground, or attached to a stable metal platform that can support the weight of the performer.
