A powerful earthquake has struck Taiwan near the southern city of Tainan, with five people confirmed dead and dozens feared trapped. The U.S. Geological Survey measured at magnitude 6.4, struck a few minutes before 4 a.m., shaking a wide area of southern Taiwan. Particularly hard hit were sections of the city of Tainan. A 17-story apartment building collapsed, and 12 other buildings either fell over or were leaning, the government said.
