More than 80 Nepali children go missing every 30 months, according to a report from the Central Child Welfare Board, a government body working to ensure child rights. Some are found later, whereas the status of many remains unknown forever. What is worse, only half of them are found. The report shows that of the 8,485 children disappeared in the past five years only 4,795 were found. At 4,256, the number of missing girls is slightly higher than that of the boys. The National Centre for Children at Risk (NCCR), which was established with a view to fighting against child trafficking, finding the missing children and rehabilitating them, is in a sorry state due to scarcity of resources and budget. The centre is unable to manage a shelter for those kids who are yet to be rehabilitated in their families. Due to this, it has to take help from the private organizations for their protection. While 2,186 were lost in 2009-10, the number fell to 1,453 in 2012-13 and went further down to 837 last fiscal year.
