Roads and roundabouts of the capital city are littered with garbage with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City not collecting waste for the last three days.

Heaps of waste are seen on roads, open spaces and street corners.City waste management has been halted since Thursday after 11 KMC employee unions decided not to collect garbage, demanding security. The employee unions’ demand follows protests and vandalism by locals of Okharpauwa, Nuwakot in the wake of death of a minor in the locality on Wednesday.A KMC truck that was carrying waste to dump it at the Sisdole Landfill Site had knocked down five-year-old Rijan Shrestha in Okharpauwa on Wednesday. The minor’s death sparked protests and irate locals had torched the truck and four KMC dozers. They had also pelted stones at a fire engine of Juddha Barun Yandtra that was heading to the site to douse the fire. The driver was injured in the incident.KMC staff have said such violent acts have posed threat to their safety.
