Panel tells lawmakers not to use helicopters

Posted by Anup Baral May 18, 2015 :
National Disaster Management Monitoring and Direction Special Committee of the parliament on Sunday directed all its 14 sub-committees going to earthquake affected districts for monitoring, not to burden the government bodies of the districts. The meeting of the Special Committee also decided to inform the sub-committees not to use helicopters, which were being used for quick distribution of relief materials to the needy people.

The decision of the Special Committee was prompted after NC lawmaker Purna Bahadur Khadka criticised the use of helicopters meant for supplying essentials to the victims by members of the sub-committee formed to assess relief work in the worst hit districts. NC joint General Secretary Khadka said that lawmakers who had gone to Gorkha and Dolakha had misused the choppers in this critical situation. The special committee has directed lawmakers of the sub-committees to make their study cost-effective. The meeting also directed the Legislature-Parliament secretariat to manage a toll-free number to receive complaints from victims round-the-clock.
