When we smile, it makes people around us feel good about themselves and cheers them up instantly. Not only does a smile have a magnetic effect on souls hovering about, but it has a positive effect on those who smile. It makes us optimistic. It makes the world around us a better place to live in. A smile is an upward curve in our face; it definitely reflects happiness. It is warm and welcoming. It makes us approachable thereby making others feel at ease. Smiles just require one to use two of his facial muscles. Why not make a small effort if it has such marvellous and profound outcome. Smile at people you encounter along the streets. Smile at the homeless and hagglers. Don’t pretend to be serious and ignore them, a simple smile will make their day. Smile at work. People work as zombies the whole day, an encounter with a sweet smile would be more than pleasing. I listen to music when I am heading towards the hospital in the morning. It is just that I am habituated to loud volume, trust me, at times it can be loud enough to rupture one’s eardrum. So it’s obvious, there is no input of extra-terrestrial sound and I am pretty comfortable with it. One day one of my Sri Lankan friends, Lahiru, asked me, ‘Are you asocial? You don’t even smile at people as you pass by.’ Too often we underestimate the power of a smile but it has the potential to turn ambience around us. So simple yet a smile holds a powerful allure. It draws people to your energetic realm. It creates an aura that makes those around you and others like you and enjoy your company. If we prefer being with jovial people, it’s the same human tendency that others carry.
